5 Tips for a Healthy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is all about food, friends and family, and it can be difficult to make healthy choices when you’re surrounded by a smorgasbord of good eats. Before writing this holiday off as a free-for-all here are 5 tips for staying healthy and happy while still being able to enjoy yourself this holiday.


1.) Hunger Cues. Honor your hunger by eating when you are physically hungry and stopping when you are satisfied. Avoid overeating by asking yourself, “am I really hungry for another bite, or have I had enough?”


2.) Balance your plate. Fill your plate half with vegetables, one quarter with turkey, ham or whatever protein is there, and the rest with a healthy starch, like corn, sweet potatoes, sweet potatoes and rolls!. Make your plate as colorful as possible!


3.)Eat Slower. Savor every bite by eating slowly and putting your fork down between bite. Focus on conversations with family/friends and enjoy eating one bite at a time.


4.) Workout. If you don’t have time to make it in the gym try a quick at home workout or take a morning walk. If the weather is nice encourage all your family/friends to take a stroll around the neighborhood after eating.


5.) Enjoy your meal and move on. If you end up eating more than you planned, make sure to let go of the guilt. Remember to focus on what really matters this Thanksgiving, spending time with friends and family.
